Snapchat has announced that it has begun testing a new visual search tool and is planning to partner with Amazon to launch it. This new feature will allow users to take a photo of a product or it’s bar-code on Snapchat and hold down the screen to launch an Amazon page to learn more about the product and ultimately make a purchase.

Explaining the process behind this move Snap Inc said in a blog post “When the item or bar-code is recognized, an Amazon card will appear on-screen, surfacing a link for that product or similar ones available on Amazon. Tap your selection to visit the Amazon App (if you have it installed on your phone) or Amazon.com, where you can complete your purchase or keep browsing.”

This tool is one of many being introduced by the social media companies to attract users to social shopping. If successful, we might experience a big surge in this sector, and likely see more innovative and disruptive ideas being introduced in the near future.
