The computer virus threat has changed dramatically. The terms spyware, adware, trojan horses, rootkits and worms have all featured in the press recently as new methods employed by hackers designed to infiltrate or damage computer hardware without the owner's knowledge. This new array of malicious software (known as malware) includes viruses and is a growing threat to your computer hardware and data investment. According to one report "As much malware [was] produced in 2007 as in the previous 20 years altogether."
So why is an anti-virus so important? Unprotected computers as well as poorly managed anti-virus protected computers are easy targets for malware. Once a machine has been infected, malware can quickly replicate itself to other machines, slowly destroying or distributing your company's private data without your knowledge. Very quickly, a poor backup regime combined with infected computers can result in your data being destroyed or corrupted for good, resulting in an expensive and time consuming job to recover or even manually recreate data.
